The Lake Macquarie Catchments Overland Flood Study covers the suburbs of Mannering Park, Doyalson North, Kingfisher Shores, Chain Valley Bay, Lake Munmorah, Crangan Bay, Summerland Point, Gwandalan and Point Wolstoncroft. The study area drains an area of about 30 km² to Lake Macquarie. Major natural channels within the contributing catchments include Karignan Creek, Tiembula Creek and Bonny Boy Gully. The study area also consists of a series of constructed drainage channels, a stormwater system with sub-surface piped drainage, and naturally formed overland flowpaths.

Due to the nature and complexity of the hydraulic modelling, it was deemed appropriate to filter the design flood extents, such that only regions of flood depths greater than 0.15 m were included.

",
